TRUMP: NO MORE CEASEFIRES, End This War /Lt Col Daniel Davis

Trump’s Peace Gambit: Why Ukraine’s War Won’t End Without Real Compromise

In this episode of Deep Dive, I lay out why the only real path to ending the Russia–Ukraine war is through a direct peace agreement—not just another temporary ceasefire or symbolic gesture. Trump, who once opposed sanctions and ultimatums, is now pushing for serious negotiations aimed at ending the war outright.

One idea gaining traction is an “air ceasefire”—a confidence-building measure that could pave the way for a Trump–Putin–Zelensky summit, possibly within weeks. But major roadblocks remain.

Zelensky continues to demand sanctions pressure, Western security guarantees, and insists on the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” Meanwhile, European leaders have issued a joint statement backing Ukraine’s EU/NATO path and rejecting any Russian veto—positions Moscow sees as existential threats.

These demands risk sabotaging Trump’s peace initiative. Russia has made it clear: it will never accept those terms. And if compromise is blocked, Putin will keep fighting until Russia achieves its goals by force.

I argue that Western leaders have repeatedly rejected diplomatic off-ramps—from the Minsk agreements to the Istanbul talks—prolonging the war and Ukrainian suffering. If Zelensky or Europe refuse to budge, Trump must call them out directly. And if they won’t pursue peace, the U.S. should consider withdrawing support entirely.

Bottom line: this war won’t end until Putin and Zelensky reach a deal. But if Western demands remain unrealistic, Ukraine faces continued devastation—unless its leadership changes course.
